Five correction officers were evaluated following a suspected fentanyl exposure Friday evening at Auburn Correctional Facility.

According to the Auburn Fire Department, the Cayuga County 911 Center received reports around 6:10 p.m. that two individuals were experiencing symptoms after being exposed to an unknown substance at the prison on State Street in Auburn.

Auburn City Ambulance and Throop Fire Department ambulance crews initially responded to provide medical care. After evaluating the patients, EMS personnel requested an upgraded response that included the Auburn Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team.

Truck Company, Rescue 1, Engine Company 3, and the department’s Duty Chief responded to the scene and arrived within minutes. Fire officials said crews were advised that five correction officers may have been exposed to the substance.

A hazardous materials entry team entered the facility and conducted testing on the suspected item along with multiple surrounding surfaces and areas for possible contamination. Preliminary field tests indicated positive results for fentanyl in multiple locations.

Two correction officers were transported by ambulance to Auburn Community Hospital for further evaluation, while three additional officers were evaluated at the scene.

Emergency crews remained at the facility conducting investigation, mitigation, and decontamination operations before clearing the scene around 7:32 p.m.

Officials said the items involved were secured and turned over to the Department of Corrections. The incident remains under investigation.
