An Auburn man has been arrested on an indictment warrant following an investigation into an alleged sex offense involving a minor.

According to the Auburn Police Department, officers arrested 21-year-old Brett Copes III on Thursday on a warrant issued through Cayuga County Court. Authorities said Copes III was indicted on two counts of Disseminating Indecent Material to a Minor in the First Degree, a Class D felony, and one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class A misdemeanor.

Police said the charges stem from an investigation conducted by the Auburn Police Department Detective Bureau into allegations that Copes III sent multiple explicit videos to a child.

According to investigators, the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office presented forensic evidence and testimony before a grand jury, which resulted in the indictment.

Copes III was processed at the Auburn Police Department before being transported to the Cayuga County Jail pending arraignment.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the investigation to contact Detective Weeks at 315-252-4706.
