Paul Szmal: FLX Morning continues at 7.53. Celebrate, Commemorate! The big celebration at the birthplace of Memorial Day in Waterloo is going to happen this weekend and I'm already starting to put in as many lines as I can to the big guy to get us some halfway decent weather. Yeah, get rid of the bad stuff during the week.
Ave Bauder is here. Normally you hear him talking about cooperative extension stuff, which we will in a minute, but you are a part of the living history portion of Celebrate, Commemorate.
Dave Bauder: Yes, so I am co-chair with Marty Hillman with for the living history week part of the weekend and obviously what we want to try to do is remind people of the real reason for Memorial Day and so we do that by having some Civil War reenactors, some Civil War personages all around the village, particularly on Oak Island.
Paul Szmal: I know this is something you've been into for a long time.
Dave Bauder: Yeah, I was figuring it out. I just finished our training weekend. I think it's 29 years I've been doing Civil War reenacting.
Paul Szmal: Wow, yeah. Yeah, that's fantastic. So yeah, so we will have, we will start off actually on Friday night with at the American Civil War Memorial, which for those people that are not aware, that is, it's actually the only, if I'm remembering correctly, it is the only memorial in the United States that's designed to honor both sides, or not honor, but commemorate both sides of the of the conflict. That's going to be, so it's our annual illumination ceremony and remembrance ceremony. That's on Locust Street across from the lock at eight o'clock. President Lincoln will be speaking and we'll, they'll be putting luminaria in front of each one of the cenotaphs there that represent actually the 50-plus residents of Waterloo who died during the Civil War.
Dave Bauder: Ah, okay. And then starting Saturday morning, the various units will be marching in the parades. We have, or in the parade, we will have infantry, cavalry, and our pioneer. I will, I will just let people know we do not have an artillery unit this year, but that's okay. We still have plenty of other reenactors who will be there. And the big guest, Fritz Klein, who is, portrays Abraham Lincoln. He is the premier Lincoln reenactor in the United States movies. He's been to the White House when President Obama was there and had an evening of different presidents visiting him. That was, Fritz Klein was was Lincoln. And then Carolyn Evans portrays Harriet Tubman, and she's been with us, not last year, but for several years previous, and she does an amazing job with with Harriet Tubman.
Paul Szmal: And what about the events that are actually happening on Oak Island itself?
Dave Bauder: So, on Oak Island itself, we'll be running down through. There's, if you get, pick up one of the schedules, you will find that there's things happening at every portion during the day. And also, just the National Memorial Day Museum will also, on Main Street, will also be open. But down on Oak Island, we'll have Merry Mischief playing all day. So they, they kind of provide very nice background music for the whole, the whole event. President Lincoln's speaking at one at the Pavilion. You can actually, we're repeating this, we did it last year and it was a really big hit, if you would like to take a boat tour with, with either Tubman or Lincoln. On Saturday, it will be two o'clock, I will be Harriet Tubman with our FLX Water Adventures boat tour. And then 10 o'clock on Sunday will be President Lincoln and you can hear them tell stories about their times on rivers and all of that kind of thing. It's, it's, it's, it's pretty cool.
Middle of the day on Saturday, President Lincoln will be inspecting the troops and the, all during the day at various times. They will be doing demonstrations, musket firing, bayonet drill, all those sorts of things. And same goes with Sunday morning. We actually, Sunday morning, there'll be a church, Civil War era church service at the American Civil War Memorial over on Locust Street. And then various and sundry things. Who are the sons of the unit veterans will do some songs of the Civil War. Actually, I'll be doing that with Steve Dupre at 11 o'clock. And then Pioneers, again, musket firing demonstrations, presentations by Lincoln and Tubman, all sorts of great things.
And we've got about 30 seconds, so quickly we want to mention that Cornell Cooperative Extension will have the, will be at the culinary tent. We'll be at the culinary tent, middle of the Lafayette Park. Please stop by. All sorts of fun things. Everything from our blender bike to making, making whipped cream from cream, making whipped cream from cream, yes. So, but baked goods. And on Sunday is our 8th annual Junior Iron Chef competition, where the 4-H'ers kind of do chopped. And if anybody still wants to participate, middle or high school students, teams of three to four, you can just get ahold of us at SenecaCountyCCE.org.
Paul Szmal: All right, thank you very much, Abe Bonner, joining us here on FLX Morning. It is 7.59 local news with Greg and the CBS World News Roundup are next.
