The Smith Opera House in Geneva has a packed schedule of films, concerts and live performances lined up through the fall, continuing the venue’s yearlong celebration of its 130th anniversary.

Susie Monahan joined the FLX Morning Podcast on Friday to walk through the upcoming calendar at the Smith, which she noted is now the only place to catch a movie in Geneva — and at just $10 a ticket, likely the most affordable option in the region.

As part of the venue’s “March Through the Decades” series, the Smith is currently spotlighting the 1970s with a screening of The Godfather, shown on what Monahan called the largest screen in the Finger Lakes — 30 feet by 40 feet. The series continues with Purple Rain on July 11, representing the 1980s.

This coming Thursday, June 19, the Smith screens The Birdcage, the 1996 comedy starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane.

The Fourth of July weekend brings a particularly busy stretch. On July 5, the 198th Army Band performs a free patriotic concert. July 6 brings Irish group The High Kings. July 7 features Sing Sing, the acclaimed prison arts drama that earned Coleman Domingo an Oscar nomination. And July 8 showcases a documentary by local filmmaker Megan Daniels titled I’m Still Here Love.

Before all that, Pink Talking Fish — a mashup tribute act covering Pink Floyd, Talking Heads and Phish — performs at the Smith. Tickets are all-in for under $35. The band will perform Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here in its entirety during the first half of the show.

Looking further ahead, Second City, the legendary Chicago improv troupe that has launched generations of SNL performers, comes to the Smith on September 20. On September 26, hypnotist-comedian Colin Mochrie headlines Hyprov, a hypnosis-meets-improv show. October 4 and 5 bring two performances of the Calamari Sisters, a comedy duo who perform a mock cooking show — and actually prepare a full meal on stage.

Tickets and a full schedule are available at thesmith.org.

Paul Szmal: FLX Morning continues at 7.53 and I'm joined by Susie Monaghan from the Smith Opera House in Geneva. Susie, good morning. How are you?

Susie Monahan: Good morning to you, Paul. I'm doing great. How are you?

Paul Szmal: Excellent. And you've got some really cool movies that are coming up at the Smith Opera House in Geneva which is now really the only place to see a movie in Geneva.

Susie Monahan: Yeah, so true. And so we're continuing our march through the decades, celebrating the Smiths' 130 years. And so we're now in the 1970s and showing one of the greatest films ever made, The Godfather. Star-studded cast come down and see it on the largest screen in the Finger Lakes, 30 feet by 40 feet. And the ticket prices are lower than, not only is there nowhere to go, but we've got the cheapest prices. So come down and see a $10 movie at the Smith.

And then, but this coming week on the 19th, we're showing The Birdcage, the hysterical film with Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. So that's on June 19th. And then we're continuing, we've got like a really packed 4th of July weekend, just right after 4th of July. We have the 198th Army Band coming in for an absolutely free concert full of patriotic favorites. That's on July 5th. And then The High Kings, which is an Irish band that I know a lot of folks really love in this area. That's on the 6th on Sunday. And then Sing Sing, which is a film about a arts program in a prison. And Coleman Domingo got an Oscar nomination this year for his portrayal in that. So that's a new film. And then a documentary by a local person, Megan Daniels, called I'm Still Here, Love. So that's July 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th.

But before that, we have Pink Talking Fish. And what is Pink Talking Fish, you might ask? And it's a mashup of Pink Floyd, the Talking Heads, and Fish. So those tickets, again, cheapest tickets around, with fees all in, are less than $35. It's general admission. And they're doing an entire album of Pink Floyd. I think it's Wish You Were Here.

Paul Szmal: Yep, that's the one.

Susie Monahan: Yeah, the first half before the intermission, they're doing the whole album. So if you love Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, Fish, or just love live music, come on down. And again, the ticket prices are pretty sweet on the wallet.

Paul Szmal: One of the films I'm looking forward to, because I've seen it a bunch of times, and I'm actually hoping I can make it to see it on the big screen at the Smith, is later in July. On July 11th, you're showing Prince's Purple Rain.

Susie Monahan: Yeah, the purple one, who just had a birthday in heaven last week. Yeah, so psyched. What an incredible soundtrack. Really one of the best ever, I would say. The plot is a little convoluted, but wow, what a feast for the ears with those great songs that everybody knows. So yep, July 11th. And so that's celebrating the 80s. So Godfather, 70s, and then Purple Rain. What a quintessential 80s film. In fact, I always wondered why I wore my hair like that. And then I saw, you know, when I see pictures of myself from the 80s, and then I looked at that film, you know, maybe when Prince died a few years ago, and I was like, oh, well, that's why. Everybody, their hair like that. So it's a great style.

Paul Szmal: And I want to look ahead to September for a couple of comedy performances that are going to be really cool. The first one on September 20th with Second City, the comedy troupe out of Chicago.

Susie Monahan: Yeah, and what a star-studded, you know, cast of former Second City folks who have been on, I mean, it's generations of SNL actors have come out of Second City training. And so now we've got the new crop coming up. And I got to say, we had them at the Smith maybe like five or six years ago. The show was hilarious. And they do, you know, it's all improv. So all of their inputs are coming from the audience. They bring people up on stage. It's just, it's a riot. So I think that's going to be a great one.

And then just a couple days later, we've got high prov, which is hypnosis and improv. So you bring people up on stage and nobody comes who's not, who doesn't want to do it. But they get hypnotized and then act in improv with Colin Mochrie, who I know a lot of folks know. So that's September 26th. I'm really excited to be bringing some comedy to the Smith. And even just a couple of weeks later, we have the Cooking with the Calamari Sisters, which, you know, that is also comedy, two performances, October 4th and 5th. And they kind of have a mock cable cooking show. And they actually cook a meal on the stage of the Smith. So I'm really looking forward to that.

And you can, by the way, get tickets for all of these events at thesmith.org. They are definitely worth checking out.

Paul Szmal: Susie, thank you so much for joining us this morning. We appreciate it, as always.

Susie Monahan: Thanks, Paul. Have a great day.
