The Smith Center for the Arts in Geneva is celebrating its 130th anniversary with a packed holiday season that includes Taylor Swift and Beatles tribute acts, a rare Irish Christmas show, classic films, and a visit from the Nutcracker — all while debuting a newly redesigned website.

Susie Monaghan joined the FLX Morning Podcast on November 22 to walk through what’s ahead at the Smith, starting with that same evening’s “Let’s Sing Taylor,” a Taylor Swift tribute show at 8 p.m. described as a family-friendly, wallet-friendly alternative to the Eras Tour — with considerably easier parking.

The 130th anniversary celebration, which kicked off in late October and runs through October 2025, centers on a monthly film series spotlighting each decade of the Smith’s history. In December, the French film Joyeux Noël — the true story of the World War I Christmas Eve truce — screens around December 20. January brings a silent film presentation of The Mark of Zorro with live accompaniment, followed by Top Hat with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in February. The Smith’s screen, at 30 by 40 feet the largest in the Finger Lakes, was built for exactly this kind of programming.

On the live performance side, the Nutcracker runs Sunday, December 1, the weekend after Thanksgiving. December 7 brings Fairy Tale of New York, an Irish-themed Christmas show that Monaghan described as “St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas Eve rolled into one” — a production officially backed by Tourism Ireland. The New York Bee Gees take the stage December 13, followed by Eagles tribute band Eagle Mania on December 14, with tickets for the latter selling fast. And on December 21, the Smith teams up with the Geneva Business Improvement District to screen Elf at 2 p.m. — pajamas encouraged, with a possible appearance from a certain bearded man in red.

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday deals are currently available on the Smith’s newly relaunched website with discounts on upcoming shows — a good option for holiday gift-givers. Monaghan also gave an early heads-up for March 6, when Low Slow Bows will perform.

Tickets and information are available at thesmith.org or by calling the box office, which opens at 10 a.m.

Paul Szmal: Good morning, 752FLXMorning brought to you by Enstech Automotive and Trailer, your go-to destination for hauling and vehicle services, 2567 Edwards Road, Waterloo, online EnstechAutomotive.com. We're Zooming with Susie Monaghan from the Smith. Good morning.

Susie Monaghan: Good morning to you, Ted.

Paul Szmal: And let's start with your sharp-looking website upgrade. Isn't it awesome? I mean, I hate to say it, it took about a year for anybody who thinks that that process is fast. But wow, the result is really spectacular. So thanks for noticing. Brand new picture of the exterior on the front page, and everything looks really sharp, and we've got lots of great stuff coming up, including tonight, 8 o'clock, Let's Sing Taylor. Tell us about it.

Susie Monaghan: Oh, yeah. So calling all Swifties to come see this great tribute show tonight at 8 o'clock. Great one to bring the kids to, and a little easier on your pocketbook, I think, than taking them to the heiress tour, the real Taylor Swift shows, and a little easier parking too. So hopefully, if you've got some time, come out tonight. It's going to be a great show. She's only in Toronto. Did you invite her? She's only a couple hundred miles away.

Paul Szmal: Well, maybe she'll show up. You never know. Hey, Taylor. Come on down. Yeah. I was just going to say, remind us about you're celebrating 130th birthday of the Smith.

Susie Monaghan: We are. We just turned 130 a couple weeks ago, and this year, we're really looking at taking the whole 130th birthday year. So starting the end of October and going straight through October of 2025, and we got some really fun things planned, mostly right now focused on movies that we're going to focus on every decade that the Smith has been around. So we got a film in December that looks at the 1910s and is the true story of a Christmas Eve truce during World War I, where everybody laid down their arms and had soccer games and share. You've heard that story, I'm sure.

So this movie, it's a French movie. It's called Joyeux Noël, which means Merry Christmas. And I've heard it's fantastic. So that is, I think, on the 20th of December. And anyway, and then in January, we'll have a silent film with live accompaniment, The Mark of Zorro. So that's a Douglas Fairbanks film. We're going to have a top hat, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in February. You get the idea. Every month is a further decade ahead in the Smith's history.

So that's a really fun way to highlight that incredible movie screen, 30 feet by 40 feet, the largest one in the Finger Lakes. And you know, those old films were designed to, well, they were made to be projected on those huge screens, which we just don't see anymore.

Paul Szmal: And of course, so we're getting to the holiday season, the classic, The Nutcracker on December 1st, Ithaca Ballet. Yeah, so you got your Thanksgiving leftovers and then you launch right into the holiday season. I did want to say that we've got a bunch of specials with Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday. So check those out on our website. We've got some percentages off some ticket prices for shows that are happening in the new year. And, you know, so that's a nice way, a little better on your pocketbook if you're thinking about gift giving.

Susie Monaghan: The Nutcracker is Ithaca Ballet and it is the Sunday after Thanksgiving. So coming right up, I'm really excited about one that we have coming up on December 7th, which is called Fairytale of New York. And it is a, the way they describe it is St. Patrick's Day and Christmas Eve rolled into one. So it's an Irish themed Christmas show. This one comes straight from Ireland and is, you know, a designated Irish tourism show.

Because, you know, I am always looking for trying to monitor the quality of events that we have at the Smith. And when I saw that stamp on it, I said, if Tourism Ireland is sponsoring this, it's going to be great. So we're super excited about that one. Tickets still available, but they are going quickly. So Fairytale of New York, again, it's a great one for the whole family.

We've got two tribute bands coming up, one of which we're sponsoring. You've got the New York Bee Gees. I'm a huge Bee Gees fan. I started in radio in 78, right in the middle of their run, in the middle of disco. So the New York Bee Gees on the 13th, and of course, Eagle Mania on the 14th.

Paul Szmal: Yeah, and definitely if Eagles and Eagle Mania are your thing, jump on the website, the smiths.org, or give us a call at the box office today, and we open at 10, and get tickets because those are flying out the door, and it's going to be a fun, fun show. They are so good. Again, there are a lot of Eagles tribute bands out there, and I really needed to go in and do some quality control, and this band is terrific.

I did want to just mention, too, that we're showing Elf, the Business Improvement District in Geneva, at the end of the year, December 21st, 2 o'clock. That's the wear your jammies, and a certain man in a red suit and a white beard might or might not be there. So bring the kids there, or family ticket packets right there on the website that you can buy, save you a little money, and that's always a really funny event.

So we're looking forward to the holiday season at the Smiths. And just a bug in the ear, March 6th, Los Lobos. Just keep that one in mind. We'll talk more about that when it gets closer.

Susie, thanks as always, great stuff, happy 130th, the website looks great, and always good to talk to you.

Susie Monaghan: Thank you, Ted.
