Paul Szmal: Good morning, it's 7.50, it's the Friday Extravaganza, FLX Morning, and we haven't had a visit for a while, so let's talk with Suzy Monaghan at the Smith Center for the Arts in the Smith Opera House. Good morning.
Susie Monagan: Good morning to you, Ted. It's great to be here.
Paul Szmal: Yeah, we've got Halloween coming. That can mean only one thing, and I have to admit, I've never had the experience. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, October 26th. Oh, wow. You've never. No. It's so fun. I live a sheltered life.
Susie Monagan: Well, the movie is a blast. It is a, it's an extravaganza of just crazy over-the-top acting and great songs. Of course, the Time Warp, which is a dance I learned my freshman year in college, you know, and it's packed into a dorm room. It's just really fun, and the fans go all out, and people dress up, not everybody, but a lot of folks dress up, and in the characters from the film, and this year, we're going to have a shadow cast, which means that, yeah, there's a whole group of actors who are going to be dressed as the characters and performing while the film goes on, so, you know, that's going to be a really fun addition, and, you know, there are local folks who are coming in to do it, so there's also the famous prop bags, which you learn when to throw certain things in the air, you know, so when they get married, you throw rice, and, you know, the whole theater is a complete mess, and we have to bow down to our custodian for cleaning it up, but it's really a fun night, and I hope folks come out.
Paul Szmal: It's that last weekend, right before Halloween on Saturday night at 9 o'clock, so do come out for Rocky Horror, and I'm going to just segue right into Meatloaf, which is a tribute band that we have, it's called Celebrating Meatloaf, and it's on October 17th, and the reason that's a segue is because Meatloaf was in Rocky Horror, and he plays a dead boyfriend who's come back to life, and he's on a motorcycle, it's quite a scene when he comes back onto the screen, but, so Celebrating Meatloaf is October 17th at 7.30, and that's, I think, going to be really fun for folks who love those songs, you know, it's called Love by the Dashboard Light, the big one that everyone remembers from the 70s, and, yeah, so we're super excited about that, and, you know, it just feels like fall is here and all the traditions, and our tradition at the Smith is to do an event called Brews and Bluegrass, which is hard to say, but it's a really fun event that focuses on local beers and local food and local music, and it's all in support of the Smith, which is such a spectacular asset for downtown Geneva and the whole region for the shows that we put on there, so we hope you all will come out to that, it's one price, and we have ten breweries participating, each of them are bringing at least two beers for folks to try, so there's lots and lots of beer that night, lots of food to go along with it from folks like Heavy Kevvy's locally, and, you know, and then we have music from the Crooked North, they're playing on the big stage, and then we have Bobby Henry, which I think a lot of folks know, who's playing, kind of warming up folks as you're coming through the door, so he'll be playing in the lobby.
Susie Monagan: So you go around the building, you look at the beautiful Smith, you taste beers, and, you know, after an hour and a half, you go into the theater and kick up your heels with some great bluegrass, so that is Brews and Bluegrass, yeah!
Paul Szmal: That is a week from tomorrow, that's Saturday, October 12th at 6pm, and if you go to the smith.org and check the calendar, you'll see all these, and to sort of wrap up our Halloween theme, the day before that, Friday, October 11th, you have Spirits of the Smith, a paranormal investigation, and there's also a Pride angle there, so tell us about that.
Susie Monagan: Yeah, so these folks came to us and asked to start investigating the Smith, and they've come by a couple of times and have found plenty of activity. I have to say, unfortunately, that event is sold out. It was pretty much as soon as we put it on sale. It's pretty, they can only take around a handful of people, 40 I think, so it wasn't hard to sell it out, but we'll bring them back, and, you know, ghosts are in the Smith, Halloween or not, so we could have a paranormal investigation, ghost hunting I think they call it, you know, in the winter, and we'd love to do it again, but that's gonna be a lot of fun, and I guess there are some folks haunting the Smith, as many old theaters have, and yeah, so that's fun.
Paul Szmal: You know, we also are really trying to do a lot more films, and we're gonna be doing Tonight and Tomorrow, an anime classic called Spirited Away, and Miyazaki, who's one of the greatest anime directors, that's his big hit, and we really hope folks come to that. It's Tonight and Tomorrow, all ages, at 7 o'clock, and then we're gonna be the Smith turns 130 later on this month, and so we're celebrating by presenting films from every decade that the Smith has been around, starting in the 1890s, so there wasn't a lot of feature films in the 1890s, but we've decided to show Moulin Rouge, because it's set in the 1890s, so right, that'll be just a couple nights before Rocky Horror, the end of the month, so we've got tons going on, and something for everyone, hope everybody can come down, check out the website, thesmith.org, and come pay us a visit.
Susie Monagan: Alright, I'll put one more bug in, everybody's here, Friday November 22nd, Let's Sing Taylor, a live band experience celebrating Taylor Smith, we don't have a lot of time for the details, but we'll do that again in our next visit, thanks Susie, as always, appreciate it.
Paul Szmal: Thank you, Ted, take care, have a great day.
