The Geneva Public Library has a packed schedule this spring, including an ongoing basket raffle, a nine-day book sale starting April 3, and a full lineup of spring break programs for kids, teens, and adults.

Brandy Rousel from the Geneva Public Library joined FLX Morning to walk through the library’s upcoming events, starting with a basket raffle that’s already underway. With more than 90 baskets on display, the raffle features prizes for all age groups. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and can be purchased in person at the library or online via PayPal through the library’s website. The drawing will be held April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon. The library’s Facebook page will also announce special ticket sale days leading up to the drawing.

The annual book sale runs April 3–11 on the second floor of the library in the reference section. All prices include sales tax. As the sale winds down April 9–11, shoppers can take advantage of special deals, including a popular bag sale on the final day.

Spring break programming includes painting classes for kids and teens, family bingo with prizes and treats, and a visit from a children’s author on Wednesday who will read his story followed by a bear-themed craft activity. On Thursday, Super Mario Brothers Gaming — a hit from last year — returns to the library. This Saturday, April 5, Hobart and William Smith students will present an Edible Science Fair, exploring the chemistry of cooking with hands-on food science activities including cotton candy-making.

Year-round programs at the library range widely. For younger children, Messy Story Hour on Mondays and Wednesdays blends books, songs, and sensory-based activities — think whipped cream car washes and chocolate mud. Teens can participate in yoga, cooking classes, and a growing Dungeons & Dragons program that now includes Saturday one-shot sessions open to adults as well.

Adult offerings include craft classes (Thursday mornings 1–3 p.m. and evenings 5–7 p.m.), one-on-one career counseling, a genealogy research roundtable, multiple book clubs, Tai Chi, open stitch, and a conversational Spanish class.

Paul Szmal: Welcome back to FLX Morning on Finger Lakes News Radio. It's 8.40. I'm joined this morning by Brandy Roussel from the Geneva Public Library. Brandy, good morning. How are you this morning?

Brandy Rousel: Good morning to you. I'm doing great.

Paul Szmal: Fantastic. Thanks for being on with us here this morning. I know we've got a couple of key fundraiser events that are going on right now that we want to talk about. First off being the basket raffle.

Brandy Rousel: Yes, so our basket raffle is going on right now and the drawing is April 26th from 10am to 12pm. We currently have over 90 baskets on display. And there's something for all ages. So we have adults, teens, older kids, younger kids, so just about everything.

Paul Szmal: How does that basket raffle work, Brandy? Is that something where you come in to the library and check things out?

Brandy Rousel: Yes, so you can come in and you can buy tickets. They're a dollar each or six tickets for five. You can follow us on Facebook for days that we have special ticket sales. Or if you would rather, you can view all the baskets online at our website. And then you can buy tickets via PayPal. And that links on our website as well.

Paul Szmal: Fantastic. So a couple of different ways to participate in that. Now I know the other fundraising effort that happens starts tomorrow and that's the annual book sale.

Brandy Rousel: Yes, we are definitely looking forward to that one. So our book sale begins tomorrow. So that is held on our second floor in reference and that will go on from April 3rd to the 11th. And all prices for book sale items include sales text. You don't have to worry about that. And there's lots of items to choose from.

Paul Szmal: Yeah, and there are some specials as we get down towards the back end of the sale towards the 9th, 10th, and 11th that I remember talking with Spike and Deb about as well.

Brandy Rousel: Yes, as soon as we get to the end. Yes, there are. Yeah, including the bag sale, which I believe is on the last day.

Paul Szmal: Yes. Yeah, that one people really love.

We're getting ready for a lot of kids to, well, some kids have already taken spring break, but we're getting ready for the Easter break coming up. And that acts like a spring break for a lot of youngsters. What are some of the plans for the library has for some spring break activities?

Brandy Rousel: Yeah, so during spring break we have some painting classes that we're doing for kids and teens as well. Then we also have our favorite that everybody loves is family bingo. And they can come in do bingo win prizes treats. Kids really love that game. So we're looking forward to bingo again. And then on Wednesday, we're going to have an author come in and read his story. And then we're going to do a special little bear bear adventure craft to go along with the story.

Paul Szmal: Oh, nice. Yeah, it's always nice to have an author come in and, you know, their book and let the kids see what, you know, have their author read to them. Yeah, it's always a great. I love the idea that there are still programs where people are reading books to kids.

Brandy Rousel: Yes. Yeah. So definitely looking forward to that one. I'm sorry. Go ahead, Brandi.

Paul Szmal: You're fine. Go ahead. And then after that, we have Super Mario Brothers gaming on Thursday. And that was a big hit last year. So we brought it back again this year.

Brandy Rousel: What are some of the other kids programs that are in place at the library?

We have teen yoga. We do kids yoga once a month. We do cooking classes for kids. Those are very, very popular. We also have cooking classes for teens. Oh, goodness. We have a messy story hour Mondays and Wednesdays.

Paul Szmal: I'm curious. What is a messy story hour?

Brandy Rousel: So in messy story hour, we do books and songs. So we'll do our good morning songs and we'll shake out our sillies. We'll read a book. Then we'll do more songs. We'll do another book. And then we move on to a sensory-based activity. And then once they finish that, they're free to go and play toys.

Paul Szmal: Ah, so it's a sensory activity. That could be something involved like watercolor painting, for example.

Brandy Rousel: Yes, we do that. We do like a messy car wash where it's whipped cream and chocolate syrup and they can drive their cars through it. We'll do Play-Doh. We did animals stuck in mud. Chocolate mud. But sometimes we'll do peas in water to give a sensory bead kind of effect.

Paul Szmal: Right. But non-toxic.

Brandy Rousel: Mm-hmm. So, yeah, all sorts of different stuff.

Paul Szmal: Yeah, and it sounds like these activities are fun and they're geared towards a variety of age groups. I could see where like the messy story hour are great for younger kids, but you also mentioned things like yoga for teens. So there's stuff for teenagers as well.

Brandy Rousel: Yeah, and we also have a Dungeons & Dragons for teens that's been growing every year. They really love it. And then we've kind of moved it on to some Saturdays as well for Dungeons & Dragons one-shots where teens and adults can meet up together and they can play a game in one Saturday.

Paul Szmal: Yeah, and that's something that doesn't always happen in the world of D&D.

Brandy Rousel: Yes, yeah. So they've arranged it so you can actually get through the game in one Saturday.

Paul Szmal: No, that's pretty neat. How can people find out more about all of these programs?

Brandy Rousel: So they can visit our website at gplny.org and then just click on our events and you can find them there. If you want to register, you can do that on our calendar from that site as well.

Paul Szmal: And one of our events that's coming up this Saturday that Hobart and William Smith will be presenting is Edible Science Fair.

Brandy Rousel: Oh, that sounds neat. Can you tell me more about that?

Paul Szmal: Yeah, so they're just going to kind of use food science and the chemistry of cooking and show kids and their parents how you can make different things. One of them is like cotton candy and kind of use the science of how it's made. So it's supposed to be really yummy too. I'm looking forward to it.

Brandy Rousel: Yeah, this sounds like a good time. And I know we've been focusing on a lot of the programs for children. I don't want to sell the adults short because there are plenty of adult programs that happen at the library as well.

Paul Szmal: Yes, there are. So we have an adult craft class that you can sign up for that meets twice. Well, they have two different days. It's the same craft. So you can either do a morning one, which is from 1 to 3 p.m. and they meet on a Thursday. Or there's a nighttime one also on a Thursday from 5 to 7. So you can kind of get to it for which hours work for you best. We also have one-on-one career counseling coming up. We have a genealogy research roundtable that's really popular. I know people love that. Let's see. We've got lots of different book clubs that they can join all on our website. We do a Euchre club here as well. Let's see. We have Tai Chi, Open Stitch, Let's Learn Spanish together. So if you want to kind of, you know, start learning Spanish or practicing your Spanish if you've done Spanish before, it's a conversational class. So you can come in and learn how to converse in Spanish.

Brandy Rousel: Yeah, those kinds of refresher classes are great if you took the language in school and you've forgotten a lot of the stuff. Those are great ways to help kind of re-trigger that memory in your brain.

Paul Szmal: Yes, it is. It's great.

Well, fantastic. Brandy, thank you so much for sharing all of these different programs. And again, if you want to give us the website, people can peruse at their leisure and check out some of the programs offered for, well, the wide range from age 7 to 70 and everything in between.

Brandy Rousel: Yes. So our website is gplny.org. And don't forget the basket raffle. That, again, is going on as we speak.

Paul Szmal: Yes, it is. And you can either do that online or you can go to the library in person and get your tickets and then the book sale starts tomorrow.

Brandy Rousel: Yes, it does.

Paul Szmal: All right. We're so excited.

Wonderful. Thank you so much, Brandy. Have a great day.

Brandy Rousel: You too. Bye.

Paul Szmal: It is 849 on FLX Morning.
