The Geneva Public Library’s fall book sale returns September 18–26, featuring between 15,000 and 17,000 books, DVDs, audio titles, and puzzles — with prices starting as low as a quarter and bag sales at the end offering everything for just a dollar or two.

Spike and Deb, organizers of the semi-annual Friends of the Library book sale, stopped by FLX Morning to preview the event. The sale will be held on the second floor of the Geneva Public Library, opening at 8:30 a.m. — a half-hour earlier than previous sales — and running through the library’s normal closing hours each day.

Pricing is tiered throughout the sale’s run. During the first several days, hardcover and trade paperback books are $2 each, while mass market paperbacks, children’s books, and young adult titles are five for a dollar (or 25 cents each). DVDs, audio books, and puzzles are 50 cents. As the sale progresses into discount days, hardcovers drop to $1, and a buy-five-get-one-free deal kicks in on any items. The sale wraps up with three bag sale days priced at $5, $2, and $1 per bag — fill it up and pay the day’s flat rate.

Organizers noted this year’s sale has fewer mass market paperbacks than usual — and offered a surprising reason why. According to Spike and Deb, mass market paperbacks are expected to cease production as of January 1, 2026, as publishers have found them no longer financially viable to print. That leaves hardcover, digital, and trade paperback formats as the remaining options going forward.

The sale is a particularly good resource for teachers looking to build classroom libraries at the start of the school year, organizers said, as well as for readers stocking up before the winter months.

The Geneva Public Library is located in downtown Geneva. For more information on hours, visit the library’s website or stop in directly. Spike and Deb are scheduled to return to FLX Morning on Friday, September 12, with an update ahead of the sale’s opening.

Paul Szmal: It is 7.52 now and 5.56 on FLX Morning and I am joined by Spike and Deb and anytime they are here that means that there is a book sale coming up and Spike looks like we're getting ready for the fall book sale.

Spike, Deb: We sure are. We've got between 15 and 17,000 books so we're hoping that you'll be able to come by and find ones you're liking.

Paul Szmal: Well with a selection of 15 to 17,000 I've got to think there's something there for just about any taste.

Spike, Deb: Absolutely. I think so.

Paul Szmal: And so Deb, when does the sale start?

Spike, Deb: Sale starts on September 18, it's a Thursday. We're following a little bit different hours this time. We're going to be opening at 8.30 rather than 9 o'clock but then following the hours of the library as per usual. So the sale goes from the 18th of September to the 28th, I'm sorry, 26th of September.

Paul Szmal: And the way that sale breaks down there's a little bit of a price break involved I believe as things kind of roll on?

Spike, Deb: Yes. The first couple, three, four days are full price days and you get a hardcover, a trade book for $2, mass market, kids books, young adult books, they're five for a dollar, can't beat that, or 25 cents each. We have all kinds of audio, DVDs, we've got lots of puzzles and they're 50 cents.

Paul Szmal: Okay, and then as the sale goes on?

Spike, Deb: We get discount days, yay! Hardcover, trade, go down to $1, the mass market, kids, young adult, stay at five for a dollar, 25 cents, audio and puzzles go to 25 cents, and on those days, if you buy five things, any five things, you can get another item, that sixth item, free.

Paul Szmal: Wow, that's a fantastic deal.

Spike, Deb: We think so. And then finally, always we have our bag sales, and we've got three of them. We've got a $5 bag sale, $2, and a $1 bag sale. Again, you can't beat the price. Bring in a bag and fill it up and pay on whatever day you're coming in.

Paul Szmal: So 15 to 17,000 books, tons of DVDs, and all sorts of great deals going on. Eventually, you could buy an entire bag worth of stuff for a buck. You can't beat these kind of deals.

Spike, Deb: No. It's a great time for people, of course, who are readers, especially with the winter season unfortunately coming in, and you want to sit down with a good book. But for teachers who are just starting out, they want to replenish or start up a library in their room, this is a great time to come in.

Paul Szmal: We don't have that many paperbacks, the mass market books, they're not so much this year. So if you're a paperback person, now might be the time to buy because we understand they're not going to be printed anymore.

Spike, Deb: Oh, wow.

Paul Szmal: Wow. So that's a change.

Spike, Deb: It is. They just couldn't make the money on it, the printers, isn't that amazing?

Paul Szmal: I know. It's hard to imagine a world without paperbacks. It certainly is. I'm just trying to wrap my head around it now that you've just said it, and it's just like 90% of the books that I have are paperbacks. And starting the first of the year, 2026.

Spike, Deb: So it'll be a hardcover or virtual? And trade press. It's a book almost the size of a hardcover, but it's got a softer paper cover. It's called Trade.

Paul Szmal: Oh, okay. See, I'm learning something new here today.

Paul Szmal: Okay, so Deb, what again are the dates for the sale?

Spike, Deb: The 18th through the 26th of September.

Paul Szmal: Okay. And this is at the Geneva Public Library.

Spike, Deb: Yep. Top floor, second floor.

Paul Szmal: And the hours are?

Spike, Deb: The same as the library, 8.30 until closing.

Paul Szmal: Okay. So go get yourself a bag, bring it with you, and then just fill that bag with all sorts of good stuff.

Spike, Deb: Absolutely. And you're going to find, I guarantee you're going to find something there that is going to satisfy your taste and you might even take a chance on something and be like, hey, this looks good.

Paul Szmal: Well, for a couple of bucks, why not?

Spike, Deb: That's right. You know, you might find yourself all of a sudden reading a new series of novels or getting interested in a new author just because you were able to find something relatively inexpensive that appealed to you.

Paul Szmal: Absolutely. Great idea. That's one of the things we enjoy. You can find a new author that way.

Spike, Deb: Yeah, absolutely.

Paul Szmal: Well, I thank both of you for coming in. I know you're going to come in and give us a progress report here in about another week's time.

Spike, Deb: Exactly. Next Friday morning.

Paul Szmal: Yeah, absolutely. So I will see you all next Friday. Thank you very much.

Spike, Deb: Thank you.

Paul Szmal: All right.
