The third annual FLX Home Show opens this weekend at The Cooler — the Geneva Recreation Complex — bringing together dozens of home improvement vendors under one roof for two days of exhibits, expert conversations, and a backyard barbecue giveaway.

JJ Church, owner of Church’s Flooring in Geneva, stopped by the FLX Morning Podcast on Friday to preview the event. The show runs Friday, May 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and the event coincides with Geneva’s First Friday activities downtown.

Church said last year’s show exceeded expectations. “We had a couple vendors there that do every home show in the area, and they had more people they were able to talk with than two other bigger home shows combined,” he said. Vendors this year include contractors, builders, HVAC companies, landscapers, gutter installers, and roofing specialists — essentially anything a homeowner might need for a repair or renovation project.

Church emphasized the value of face-to-face conversations with local experts. “The internet is fine, but it’s great to be able to talk to an expert and say, okay, this is what’s happening on my roof — do I need a replacement?” he said. The show also allows attendees to compare vendors side by side and find the right fit for their budget and project needs.

For the second year, the show is running an Ultimate Backyard Barbecue Giveaway. Attendees can register at the entrance booth for a chance to win a four-burner Blackstone griddle, a Pit Boss smoker, and a seven-foot open-flame patio heater.

Church also touched on flooring trends at his family’s business, which dates back to 1947 when his great-grandfather opened it out of a garage. He noted a growing shift from vinyl plank toward laminate flooring — a trend that started on the West Coast and is now reaching the region. Church’s Flooring also offers a DIY program where staff will measure your space, assist with design, and rent tools to customers who want to install their own floors.
