The Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce is shaking up its summer event calendar with an Aloha Luau on July 22nd at Prison City North in Auburn — a first-of-its-kind event for the organization that promises Hawaiian food, music, and games.

Chamber representative Amy Fuller joined FLX Morning to preview the event and share other upcoming Chamber news. The Luau is open for registration now at CayugaCountyChamber.com, where sponsorship opportunities are also listed. The “Big Kahuna” sponsor is Shamanq and Al Truss Company, with Big D’s Limousine serving as the “Summer Cruiser” sponsor — and providing shuttle service from downtown Auburn to the venue, which has limited parking capacity of around 70 cars. DJ Dorsey will spin Hawaiian music at the event, and organizers are keeping some surprises under wraps. “I don’t want to disclose everything because we’re going to slowly open that door,” Fuller said.

The Chamber’s June Member of the Month is the Cayuga County Office of Tourism, also known as Tour Cayuga, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The organization is headquartered at the Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn.

Fuller also reminded nonprofits about the Finger Lakes Grants Information Center, housed within the Chamber office. Education coordinator Jessica Rench will be hosting upcoming workshops for first-time users to learn how to navigate the grant search system. Cayuga County’s center is one of five across New York State. Appointments can be scheduled through CayugaCountyChamber.com.

Recruitment is now open for the next Leadership Cayuga class, which kicks off in September following the previous class’s May graduation. The nine-month program meets once a month and is geared toward newcomers to the area or those stepping into leadership roles. More information and applications are available at leadershipcayuga.com or by contacting Jessica Rench at the Chamber office.

Fuller also highlighted two upcoming charity golf tournaments: a Wegmans-hosted tournament at Highland on July 23rd benefiting United Way, with registration due July 1st at unitedwaycayugacounty.org; and a Beardsley Architects & Engineers tournament on August 18th benefiting Unity House, with details at unityhouse.org.

Finally, the Chamber’s Annual Dinner is set for October 8th at the Emerson Park Pavilion, with a virtual auction running alongside it. Details on the theme and registration will be released as the date approaches.

Paul Szmal: And FLX Morning continues at 8.14, we're at 70 degrees. And joining me on the line now is Amy Fuller from the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce. Amy, good morning. How are you this morning?

Amy Fuller: I'm good, Paul. How are you doing today?

Paul Szmal: Ah, doing well, doing well. And we've got a lot to talk about here, including, actually, I'm going to jump ahead a little bit here because I want to talk about this new summer event that you've got coming up on July 22nd that looks really cool. It's called the Aloha Luau.

Amy Fuller: Yes, we're trying something a little different this summer. So that's going to be, as you said, July 22nd. It's going to be at Prison City North. We already have a couple of sponsors. Our Big Kahuna sponsor is Shemunk & Al Trust Company. And then our Summer Cruiser sponsor is Big D's Limousine. So registrations now open. There's other sponsor opportunities that includes tickets to the event. And we're hoping to get a good crowd out there. We're going to have a limousine service from downtown out there because parking's a little iffy out there. I think it can hold 70 cars. But all the details are on the registration page. If you want to become a sponsor of this first event of ours for Aloha Luau, it's going to be a good time.

Paul Szmal: It's going to be a good time. Are there any specific activities planned with that, Amy?

Amy Fuller: We're going to have some fun games and stuff. We also are going to have a DJ, DJ Dorsey is going to be out there playing some nice Hawaiian music. We got a few fun ideas out there. I don't want to disclose everything because we're going to slowly open that door, but I think it'll be fun. In Prison City North, it's been a pleasure to work with and we're going to have a good time.

Paul Szmal: We're going to have a good time. Yeah, it's a neat spot to convert that into a neat place to convert into a luau.

Amy Fuller: Yeah, and we're going to have some Hawaiian-based food. We're going to have a nice big fruit and cheese tray that has a Hawaiian theme to it. It should be a lot of fun. If you want to register for that, you can go to KiugaCountyChamber.com. It's right on the homepage. Register for that event. I think it's going to be a good one.

Paul Szmal: Yeah, absolutely. Hey, let's give a shout out to the June Member of the Month.

Amy Fuller: Yes, our friends at the Kiuga County Office of Tourism, or also known as Tour Kiuga, they're celebrating 30 years this year, so they were our June Member of the Month. It comes at a really good time because as the weather is trying to break, tourism season for here is mostly in the summertime and a lot of people come for weddings and just come home to visit or come here for the first time, so there's a lot going on and they do a great job of promoting that out there. They're up at the Equal Right Heritage Centers, where their office is, and they were thrilled to receive this recognition.

Paul Szmal: Yeah, congratulations to them, especially on celebrating 30 years of doing business. That is fantastic.

Amy Fuller: The Finger Lakes Grant Information Center has some education workshops coming up?

Paul Szmal: Yes, Jessica Wrench, my education coordinator, we just want to remind people about the Finger Lakes Grants Information Center for our nonprofits. It's a good way to search for maybe grants that you didn't think you were going to be able to get. Your first time in, you come in and Jessica teaches you how the system works and she's going to be doing a couple of workshops coming up for people who've never been here before to let them know how it works and things like that, so watch your emails for that information. The Grants Information Center is right in here in the office. We're one of five in New York State. There's one in Buffalo, Rochester, Auburn, Syracuse, and Albany.

Paul Szmal: I'm glad that there's an education center for this kind of stuff because I know a lot of people or businesses or organizations are kind of looking at the process thinking maybe this is a bit daunting and it really doesn't have to be.

Amy Fuller: No. You can go to the Chamber website, go to the Finger Lakes Grants Information Center and schedule a time to come in so Jessica can walk you through how it works and then once you've got that down, you just make an appointment to come in and you can come in whenever you're available. Like I said, there's a lot of good things out there for nonprofits and this is one way that you can kind of see where they are.

Paul Szmal: Amy Fuller from the Cuyahoga County Chamber of Commerce is joining us here on FLX Morning. Education is underway for the next Leadership Cuyahoga class.

Amy Fuller: Yes. The Leadership class wound up in May and then it starts up again in September. It's a great way to, if someone's new to the area or maybe got more of a leadership role in the business, it's a good way to get familiar with the area and some other things that are going on there. They go up north and down south of the county and it's a great nine-month program. They meet once a month for the whole day and Jessica's already scheduled the orientation and working to get the monthly events scheduled. But if you want some information on that or see if it's something that you would like to try, contact Jessica Wrench here at the Chamber Office. There's a website, leadershipcuyahoga.com, that has the application and more information.

Paul Szmal: Okay. Fantastic. There's also the Wegmans Golf Outing that is going to be coming up.

Amy Fuller: Yes. This is not our event, but Wegmans and United Way are very big supporters of the Cuyahoga County Chamber and Wegmans is hosting a golf tournament at Highland on July 23rd and it'll benefit United Way of Central New York and Cuyahoga County. The deadline to register for that is a Tuesday, July 1st. So if you go to theunitedwayofcuyahogacounty.org, all the information and the application is there. I think there's some sponsor opportunities and there's also another one in August from Beardsley Architects and Engineers that their benefit, the proceeds of that are going to go to Unity House. And that's August 18th, I believe, and the information is on unityhouse.org. So we just had our tournament, it was wonderful, but we have some very supportive chamber members that are giving back to our nonprofits. So I wanted to give them a shout out here.

Paul Szmal: Yeah, absolutely. And it's great that we have this many golf tournaments that people can go out and enjoy a round of golf with their friends or their coworkers and do it for a good cause.

Amy Fuller: Right. And like I said, these are two great organizations that got some backing from some really good chamber members that are giving back to them, which is wonderful.

Paul Szmal: And we want to wrap things up this morning with a Save the Date, Amy.

Amy Fuller: Yes, our annual dinner, which is in October. We have set the date for October 8th. It's going to be at the Emerson Park Pavilion. And more information will come as it gets closer, but we're almost in July and it's flying right by here. And also along with that will be the virtual auction. So each month I'll be harassing people to donate to the virtual auction and we'll have more details on the theme of the dinner and open up registration for that as soon as it gets closer.

Paul Szmal: Well, I certainly look forward to hearing more about that. And we've covered a lot of ground here. A lot of information is available about the stuff that we've talked about on the Chamber website. What's that website again, Amy?

Amy Fuller: KiyugaCountyChamber.com.

Paul Szmal: All right. So make sure you check that out if you want to find out more information about anything that we discussed during the course of this conversation. As always, Amy, good to talk to you and we'll check in with you next month.

Amy Fuller: All right. Have a good day, Paul. Nice to talk with you too. It's 823 on FLX Morning.
