Stephen E. Halbert
Stephen (Steve) Halbert, age 78, of Wayland, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
Steve was born on August 9, 1947, in Dansville, NY, to the late Lloyd Sr. and Florence (Stauffer) Halbert. Steve worked for many years at Kelly Brother's Nursery, and later as a stone cutter and truck driver with his brother, Jerry.
Steve was an avid outdoorsman from his youth with a great love for hunting, fishing, and trapping, which he shared with his sons. Through his later years, he could be found almost daily at a local coffee shop joking with friends, enjoying their company, and sharing his strong faith. He had a great love for people, motivated by his simple but deep faith in God. He would frequently and quietly help others, not wanting any credit or fanfare.
However, Steve’s greatest love and pride was his family. He relished the days spent with his beloved wife, Esther, and their family, socializing, shooting, four-wheeling, camping, and any other thing they could do together. As a husband, father, and grandfather of great love, strength, and wisdom, he showed us the definition of a good man.
In addition to his parents, Steve was predeceased by his brothers: Jerry Halbert and Lloyd Jr. (Linda) Halbert; and sister Suzanne Fires.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Esther (Young) Halbert; his children: Seth and Rachel Halbert, Lucas and Felicity Halbert; four grandchildren: Chloe, Caylie, Caleb, and Caiden Halbert; sisters Irene McChesney, Sandy (Jim) Bourgoine; sister-in-law Pauline Halbert; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends and family may call from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the Chamberlin-Baird Funeral Home in Dansville.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at Letchworth State Park at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in the South Shelter, with a meal to follow.
