Margaret A. Sullivan
Beloved Wife and Mother
Naples, FL – Mrs. Margaret A. (Butler) Sullivan, 83, formerly of Waterbury, CT and Chatham, MA, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. For 61 years, she was the very patient wife of Francis J. Sullivan.
Marge was born in Waterbury on October 29, 1942, daughter of Robert Butler and Margaret (Casey) Butler. Raised in Waterbury, Marge attended St. Mary’s Grammar School, Waterbury Catholic High, and was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, class of 1960. She also earned an associate’s degree from Post College.
Marge was predeceased by Francis 10 months ago. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Sullivan-Well (Waterbury, CT), Robert Sullivan, and Diane Sullivan (Naples, FL); her grandchildren, Stephen, Scott, and Katie Well (Waterbury); and her great-granddaughter, Aubrie Well-Famiglietti (Waterbury). She will also be missed by her sisters-in-law, Arlene Sullivan, Alice Sullivan, and Maggie Sullivan, as well as her nieces, nephews, and Casey cousins. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Albert R. Well.
On the surface, Marge spent her time raising her children, volunteering at school, and supporting the business and political pursuits of her husband. She returned to the workforce and was happy to work as an aide for the Waterbury Health Department as a school-based health aide, retiring from her favorite assignment of Chase School. She then returned to another position in the Crosby Young Parent Program for a few more years. In retirement, she and her husband were happy to move to Oyster Pond in Chatham, where she enjoyed spending time with her many friends, both old and new. Warmer weather eventually lured them to reside in Naples, Florida.
Marge was an avid reader, enjoyed crafts, and spending time on her patio with friends. As an only child, she was comfortable in silence and learned to be observant. Once you knew her, you would come to know her wicked sense of humor as well as her warmth and genuine concern. She could make you laugh. She also enjoyed the fact that she could instill fear in the hearts of grown men with a disapproving glance from over her reading glasses. As a mother, she modeled resilience in the face of adversity, unconditional love, and a quiet faith that helped her find peace. Throughout their life together, Marge and Fran were blessed to develop lasting and deep friendships wherever they called home. Most cherished among these is their sixty-plus-year friendship with Bruce and Donna Griffith, formerly of Waterbury, Chatham, and now residing in Naples, who were steadfastly by their side through it all.
Marge died peacefully at Avow Hospice House in Naples. She was constantly surrounded by the people in her life who brought her joy. We would like to thank the compassionate staff at Avow for helping her to be at peace.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, May 19, at 10:00 AM at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main St., Waterbury. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
