Leona Ames
Leona Ames, 96, of Port Byron, NY, passed away on April 22, 2026, to be with the Lord after a brief illness. Her nurturing spirit, unwavering support, and boundless love will forever live on in the hearts of her family. She was passionate about her garden and flowers, and most importantly, her family and friends. She retired from A.A. Gates Elementary as a tireless worker and mentor to others. She taught Sunday school for many years at Countryside Methodist Church. Also, she was an avid supporter and organizer for Canal Day and Heritage Days in her town for the local parades and old-time store. In addition to her career, Leona was known for her warm and caring personality. She had a generous heart and always was ready to lend a hand to others in need or volunteer. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of many. Leona’s legacy as a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend will endure.
She is survived by her son Adrian of Port Byron, sister Norma Compson of Port Byron, and numerous nieces and nephews. Leona was predeceased by her parents Lorenzo and Elsie Ames, sisters Leila Sanford, Nellie Ausburn, Beverly VanGee, and Carol Ames, and brothers Lorenzo D. “Sonny,” Vernon “Sharkie,” Alfred, Owen, Howard, and Rodney Sr.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Port Byron, NY, with a celebration of life to be announced at a later date. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Leona Ames, please visit our floral store.
