With the upcoming election season ready to enter full swing, the Yates County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents and visitors remind everyone that the stealing, or damaging of political yard signs is illegal.

Sheriff Frank Ryan said every resident has the right to express their political beliefs without the fear or threat of harassment or victimization under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Stealing of signs, which are considered property, is punishable under New York State Penal Law.

Sheriff Ryan said the damaging of political signs is considered Criminal Mischief.
