Police have provided an update on the fire in a fourth-story apartment at St. Mark’s Terrace in Penn Yan on Tuesday.

As first responders arrived on the scene, they found 65-year-old Robert Boyce in the hallway suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. An investigation determined a small fire started as Boyce was smoking while wearing an oxygen mask, igniting the gas in his face.  The fire had burned out on its own before firefighters were able to make entry.

After initially being treated at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital, Boyce was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight. He is currently listed in stable condition.

Penn Yan Fire, Penn Yan Ambulance and Penn Yan Police responded to the scene.
