The Steuben County Public Health Department and partners are sharing updated overdose data for July 2024: 31 overdoses were reported, 0 fatalities were reported, and 5 instances of Narcan administration were cited. 1 of the fatalities under investigation from June 2024 has been confirmed to be from an overdose and 1 new fatality was reported for June 2024, bringing the confirmed fatalities for June up to 3.
In July, one of Steuben’s overdose records cited opioids as a suspected drug causing the overdose. Sixteen overdose records did not note a specific substance or were not able to be accessed for a full review, and the remaining 14 records indicated another substance was suspected to be the cause of an overdose. Other reported substances included alcohol, prescription drugs, and others.
The Institute for Human Services is now offering a new 24/7 resource to support individuals struggling with substance use called “GetHelpNY.” “GetHelpNY” offers a simple and discreet way for individuals to access support. By texting the keyword “GetHelpNY” to 898-211, users will be guided through a series of questions to help them or their loved ones find the assistance they need.
“We are pleased to add another service available for our residents who struggle with substance use,” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “Steuben County Public Health and its partners continue to create new ways to seek help and reduce the prevalence of substance use in the county.”
