Tompkins County has started the process to identify and appoint the next Tompkins County Historian. New York State law requires the appointment of a public historian for every municipality. Applications for the role can be submitted until Dec. 1.

The County Historian’s role centers on the continuation of preserving, interpreting, and elevating the county’s history. Specific ways that this is accomplished are through the supported access to primary sources, archives, and historical documentation. The historian will also ensure that public records — both past and present — are translated into a context that is accessible, accurate and relevant for researchers, public officials and residents of the area.

Interested individuals are invited to submit a cover letter and resumé to County Administration via email at [email protected] (Ref: County Historian Application) or via mail at 125 East Court Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. Electronic submission is preferred.
