One Dead, One Hospitalized After Taughannock Falls Drowning

One Syracuse man is dead and another is hospitalized after they went swimming in a restricted area at the base of Taughannock Falls in Tompkins County.

State Police say the two men were part of a group of four that entered an area marked “No Swimming” and struggled to stay above water. 26-year-old Leo Nolasco-Cruz slipped beneath the surface and did not reappear. His body was later recovered by the Underwater Recovery Team.

A 19-year-old man is listed in stable condition after being airlifted to Upstate University Hospital for hypothermia and water ingestion.

Other departments responding to the scene included Trumansburg Fire Department, Trumansburg Ambulance, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department and the Tompkins County Fire Coordinator.
