A Newfield man who admitted to possessing drugs during a traffic stop in Schuyler County in almost a year-and-a-half-ago has been sentenced to state prison.

24-year-old Rayquan Brooks was one of several people found to have drugs during a traffic stop on State Route 13 in Cayuta in October of 2023. At that time, police said they seized approximately 15.5 ounces of methamphetamine, 9 ounces of cannabis, cocaine, and other drug paraphernalia along with forged instruments. In August, Brooks pleaded guilty to a felony charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance. On Thursday, he was sentenced by Schuyler County Judge Matthew Hayden as a Second Felony Offender and received 3.5 years in state prison and two years of post-release supervision.

The case was prosecuted by Schuyler County Chief Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Hourihan.
