Bed Races Return to Penn Yan As Part of Upcoming Yates Bicentennial Party

A team of four people in green shirts race a bed on wheels down a street, with spectators watching from the side.
Participants push a decorated bed on wheels during a bed race event, a popular community celebration.

It will be the village of Penn Yan’s turn to celebrate the Yates County bicentennial on Saturday. One of the unique parts of the day-long celebration will be bed races.

“You have a bed on four wheels and you can design it any way you want it,” Carlie Chilson told WFLR’s “Open Mic” program. “The only requirement we have is that the bed has to be on wheels and powered by four people on the posts. One person sits in the middle of the bed holding a bed pan of water and whoever crosses the finish line first with the most water is the winner and we have some great prizes for these winners.”

The bed races will take place at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon on Hicks Street. If you’d like to enter a team, email [email protected]

Don’t forget Ruby Shooz will be performing at the Firemen’s Field Saturday night and that will be followed by fireworks at 10
