The Liberty League recognized two Hobart baseball players for their performances during last week’s conference championship tournament. Junior first baseman Sean Garvin was named the Liberty League Performer of the Week, while first-year relief pitcher Joe Dunham earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Hobart went 3-2 in its first-ever Liberty League Tournament appearance, defeating RPI twice by scores of 7-2 and 9-3 and beating RIT 17-6. The Statesmen finished as tournament runners-up after falling to host RIT twice.

Garvin hit .440 during the tournament with five doubles and a triple over five games. His top performance came in Hobart’s 17-6 win over RIT, when he went 4-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs scored. In the decisive Game 7, Garvin finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple.

During the tournament, Garvin broke Hobart single-season records for games played, at bats, runs, hits, doubles, fielding chances and putouts.

Garvin is the only Statesman to start all 43 games this season. He leads the team with a .395 batting average, a .490 on-base percentage and a .623 slugging percentage. His 64 hits include 17 doubles, four triples and four home runs. He is also the first Hobart player to record more than 100 total bases in a season.

Dunham earned his honor after pitching six shutout innings in an elimination-game victory over RPI. The rookie struck out a season-high seven batters while allowing just three hits as Hobart rallied for a 9-3 win to advance to Championship Saturday.

For the season, Dunham is 4-0 with a 0.88 ERA and a .183 opponent batting average across 14 appearances. He has struck out 35 batters while walking just eight.

Hobart finished the season 30-13 and earned one of 23 at-large bids to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. The Statesmen will face Mount Union at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Salisbury, Maryland.
