Red Cross Blood Drives Announced for June

The American Red Cross is urging people to schedule blood and platelet donations as the organization works to maintain a strong blood supply heading into the busy summer months.

According to the Red Cross, scheduled donations have dropped significantly in recent weeks at a time when schools are letting out, families are traveling, and summer activities are filling calendars. Officials also note that the start of the Atlantic hurricane season can lead to weather-related blood drive cancellations and disruptions.

The Red Cross says donors of all blood types are needed, along with platelet donors, to help ensure lifesaving blood products remain available for patients in need.

As an incentive, everyone who donates blood or platelets between now and June 28 will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice. Donors will also be automatically entered for a chance to win one of two $7,500 gift cards.

Several blood drives are scheduled across the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier region through the end of June.
