Seneca Lake Boaters Warned About Floating Debris

A Schuyler County Sheriff boat is docked on Seneca Lake, where authorities have issued a warning to boaters about potential floating debris.

The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office is warning boaters to use extra caution on Seneca Lake heading into the Memorial Day holiday weekend due to elevated water levels and floating debris.

According to the Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, water levels on the lake have started to recede but remain about 12 to 14 inches above normal summer levels.  Officials said large debris, including partially submerged logs, continues to surface throughout the lake and could cause significant damage to boats or serious injuries to passengers.

Marine Patrol officials warned that debris floating just below the surface can be especially difficult to spot during low-light conditions or while towing skiers, tubers, or wake surfers.

Boaters are urged to reduce speeds, remain alert at all times, and exercise extreme caution on the water throughout the holiday weekend.

The Sheriff’s Office also reminded residents and visitors to boat responsibly and prioritize safety during Memorial Day weekend festivities.
