Person Arrested After Fire Damages Home in Syracuse

A person has been arrested after a fire heavily damaged a Syracuse home Wednesday night and spread to a neighboring property.

According to the Syracuse Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to 104 Putnam Street at approximately 8:17 p.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire. Crews from Station 3 arrived in less than three minutes and found a one-and-a-half-story home heavily engulfed in flames.

A working fire was declared as firefighters stretched hose lines to the burning structure while navigating energized power lines that had detached from the home and were arcing in the front yard. Fire officials said flames were also extending to a neighboring residence.

Firefighters launched an aggressive attack, battling heavy fire conditions, intense heat, and zero visibility as they searched the home for possible occupants and worked to contain the blaze.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes and fully extinguished after about 45 minutes. Searches of the residence confirmed no one was inside.

The home sustained severe fire damage. Firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading further, although a neighboring home suffered exterior damage and a vehicle parked nearby was also damaged.

An investigation determined the fire originated on the first floor and was intentionally set, according to Syracuse Fire Investigators. Syracuse Police have made an arrest in connection with the incident, though additional details about the suspect have not been released.

No civilians or firefighters were injured.

The American Red Cross is assisting residents from both homes affected by the fire.
