Wayne Central Middle School remains closed this week following a fire last Friday night, with students shifting to remote learning for the rest of the week.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and firefighters found fire inside a second-floor classroom. The fire caused heavy damage to the classroom, with smoke damaging nearby classrooms and the school library.

The district initially planned to reopen the middle school tomorrow, but in a message to the community School Superintendent Joe Siracuse said the fire damage “requires significant professional cleaning and restoration to ensure the building is ready for students and staff.”
