Police have identified the man who drowned in the Erie Canal earlier this week. The victim was 50-year-old Edwin Rodriguez, of Newark.

Shortly before 4 on Wednesday afternoon, two people finishing near Lock 28B in Newark called 911 to report a possible drowning. They told authorities it appeared Rodriguez was swimming across the canal when he went under the water and did not resurface. A few hours later, using their boat and drag system, the Newark Fire Department was able to recover the body of Rodriguez from the Canal.

No foul place is suspected.

The Newark Police Department was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and Newark Fire and Ambulance
