Seneca County Residents Demand Retraction of News Release Supporting Cayuga Nation

Last week Seneca County and the Cayuga Nation announced what they called a “Historic Milestone.”  A joint press release announced the county would work with the federally recognized leader Clint Halftown ending over 40 years of conflict.

This week the Seneca County Board of Supervisors heard from residents upset with the agreement and the fact that it was released without public input.

Former Fayette Town Supervisor Cindy Garlick-Lorenzetti called on the board to issue a retraction.

Several supervisors seemed to agree, but no one made a motion to issue a retraction.  A motion to let the news release stand was approved.  The board’s Inter-Governmental Committee will discuss future plans to work with the Cayuga Nation.

Meanwhile, Board of Supervisors Chairman Michael Enslow , speaking on FLX Morning, says he held a meeting last week with Clint Halftown.

Enslow says no commitments were made by either side at that meeting.  He also said he was caught by surprise when the Nation this week filed a lawsuit against New York State over the Thruway being built across the Cayuga’s ancestral homeland.

Watch the Seneca County Supervisor debate the question of weather or not to issue a retraction to the news release supporting the Cayuga Indian Nation.
