A charging device plugged into an electrical outlet in one of the apartments over the Big M supermarket started Tuesday night’s fire on Main Street in Ovid that destroyed six buildings and the businesses they housed. Ovid Mayor Aaron Roisen talked about what the loss of those businesses means to the community.

Mayor Roisen said the impacted businesses are more than just a business to the community.

Main Street, along with East and West Seneca Streets, reopened Thursday night.

15 to 20 people who lived in the apartments were displaced and are being helped by the American Red Cross. Due to the overwhelming response from the Finger Lakes, the United Way of Seneca County is asking that any additional CLOTHING donations to the dropoff locations be delayed at this time. Once staff is able to sort through what’s been donated, the United Way will share any specific needs that still remain. You can find a list of locations for drop-offs and other updates regarding fundraising by clicking on the purple banner above or by clicking here
