A "Scam Alert" graphic displays a fraudulent Ontario County invoice for $8,903, instructing recipients to pay via wire transfer.

Ontario County officials are warning residents about a scam involving fake invoices.

The fraudulent notices appear to come from the county’s Planning Department and claim payment is due immediately. In reality, the Planning Department does not send bills or invoices to residents. Anyone receiving a suspicious letter is urged to call the department directly at 585-396-4455 to confirm its legitimacy.

Officials say the only communication most applicants might receive is a courtesy email about the date, time, and location of County Planning Board meetings regarding their application.

They also caution residents to be wary of payment requests involving gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, prepaid debit cards, or high-pressure deadlines.
