The village of Newark has its first hotel. A 72 room Microtel is now open on East Union Street. The project has been one of the keystones in the redevelopment of downtown, fueled by the awarding of ten million dollars in DRI funding in December, 2022. The Microtel received a multi-million dollar tax break package from the Wayne County Industrial Development Authority last year. Mayor Jonathan Taylor points to the Microtel and the development of affordable housing in the former Coventry Commons building as two of the most important economic development projects in the village in recent years.
