A Syracuse man who went surfing near the old lighthouse in Sodus Point on Lake Ontario Tuesday night had to be rescued by firefighters.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Joshua Hershfield decided to go surfing one hour before sunset and found himself pushed up against the ice wall by the waves. The current and waves kept him pressed up to the ice and he could not free himself.  Hershfield’s calls for help were heard by Sodus Point residents, who called 911.

Hershfield was pulled to safety and suffered no injuries resulting from the incident.  Police say he was wearing a dry suit designed for the cold conditions.

In addition to the Sodus Point Fire Department, the Silver Waters Community Ambulance, Wayne County EMS, and Alton Fire Department all responded to the scene.
