What does the future hold for freight transportation in the Finger Lakes? The Genesee Transportation Council is hosting a virtual public meeting later this month to gather input from stakeholders as they work on a forward-looking Regional Freight Plan.

The updated plan will address the evolving landscape of freight transportation, including the growth of e-commerce, changes in infrastructure funding, and the emergence of new manufacturing facilities. It will serve as a roadmap for the next 25 years, balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship and community well-being.

“Freight movement is the lifeblood of our regional economy,” says Jim Stack, Executive Director at GTC. “This meeting is our opportunity to collaboratively design a freight system that’s efficient but also sustainable and equitable. We’re looking to turn challenges into opportunities.”

Key focus areas of the meeting include:
  • Unveiling the region’s critical freight assets and their untapped potential
  • Addressing current freight challenges and anticipating future needs
  • Exploring innovative strategies to enhance regional competitiveness and assist in obtaining state and federal grant investment opportunities
  • Integrating sustainability and smart technology into freight operations

The GTC extends a special invitation to transportation, logistics, agriculture, climate mitigation, and public sector planning professionals. Their expertise will be crucial in crafting a comprehensive and visionary freight plan.

The virtual format of the meeting ensures accessibility and encourages broad participation from across the region.
