Identity of Kayaker Recovered from Canandaigua Lake Released

Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal kayaking incident on Canandaigua Lake last week.

Yates County 911 received a call around 10:20 a.m. Thursday reporting an overturned kayak about 50 feet from shore near the Vine Valley boat launch in Middlesex. Witnesses said one person fell into the water and could not be seen, though they were heard calling for help. After an extensive search lasting more than six hours, responders located the body of 26-year-old Ben Hamann of Farmington.

Multiple agencies from Yates and Ontario counties assisted in the six-hour search and recovery operation. They included the Yates County Office of Emergency Services, Middlesex FD, Branchport KeukaPark FD/Dive Team, Rushville FD, Canandaigua FD, Cheshire FD, Ontario County Sheriff’s Office dive team.
