HABs Monitoring Underway on Canandaigua Lake

Green, cloudy water with rocks visible beneath the surface, showing a harmful algal bloom in Canandaigua Lake.
A harmful algal bloom (HAB) is visible in the waters of Canandaigua Lake, an ongoing environmental concern for the region.

77 volunteers will spend this summer monitoring 69 zones around Canandaigua Lake for Harmful Algal Blooms. So far this summer, no HABs have been reported. The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association volunteers will report their findings using a mobile app that the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association developed.

  • CLWA has a cyanoHABs monitoring page on our website with resources and an interactive map of the Canandaigua Lake bloom reports. Click on the dots to see the dates of the reports.
  • CLWA also hosts an easy-to-use online survey where lake foam reports can be submitted. Please visit the Lake Foam webpage to find out more and scroll to the bottom to submit reports!

The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association wants residents and visitors to feel free to reach out with any questions or to report suspicious blooms. You can email them at [email protected].
