HABs Confirmed on Canandaigua Lake

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) is visible in the waters of Canandaigua Lake, an ongoing environmental concern for the region.

The first Harmful Algal Blooms of the season have been confirmed on Canandaigua Lake.

The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association reports there were 11 bloom reports in total filed this past monitoring week. Five blooms were confirmed by either lab analysis or by review from DEC.

Deep Run public beach in Gorham was closed on July 23rd due to a bloom. It remains closed until the County receives the testing results to reopen.

The Secchi disk readings that came in late last week showed an increase in clarity in open water areas – an 8.25 meter reading off Vine Valley and 7.3 meters of clarity off Bopple Hill.
