A Phelps house caught on fire Saturday night.

At around 7:30, Ontario County Sheriff’s Deputies along with Phelps, Oaks Corners, and Clifton Springs Fire Departments responded to 42 William Street for the report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, deputies and firefighters observed a house with flames emerging from the south side. The homeowners, Ron and Joanne Koomen were not home. The fire caused significant damage to the roof of the home and Code Enforcement rendered the residence uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and foul play is not suspected. The American Red Cross responded to the scene to help the Koomen’s with shelter.

Phelps Ambulance also responded to the scene.
