The Canandaigua Police Department is seeking a non-lethal alternative for use during dangerous confrontations.

The Canandaigua City Council’s Finance Committee endorsed Police Chief Mathew Nielsen’s request for PepperBall launchers. Rochesterfirst.com reports the launcher looks like a paintball gun but shoots balls of pepper spray.

The launchers allow officers to fire from a distance, so the pepper spray doesn’t come back on the officer.
