Busy Week for Canandaigua Lake HAB Monitors

Green, cloudy water with rocks visible beneath the surface, showing a harmful algal bloom in Canandaigua Lake.
A harmful algal bloom (HAB) is visible in the waters of Canandaigua Lake, an ongoing environmental concern for the region.

It was a busy work week for those who monitor harmful algal blooms.

According to the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association and the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council, trained volunteers reported 22 blooms on Wednesday and Thursday.

The groups say the northeast shoreline, from Otetiana Point to down past LeTourneau, was the most impacted.

As this week saw the first major HAB outbreak on Canandaigua Lake for this summer, samples were taken and sent to the Finger Lakes Institute for analysis.
