The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and Canandaigua Police Department were conducting a long-term investigation into drug sales on South Bristol Street in Canandaigua when an attempted arrest turned into a high-speed chase.

On Monday, officers moved in to arrest 26-year-old Jonathan Mathews of Rochester, who has an outstanding bench warrant for felony drug charges. Mathews attempted to flee by ramming an unmarked police vehicle before speeding away in a black 2016 BMW X5. He drove onto a sidewalk in front of a neighbor’s house before heading west on Bristol Street.

Police in marked vehicles pursued Mathews as he left the city and continued onto rural roads toward Farmington. However, the chase was terminated due to public safety concerns.

Authorities say Mathews, who has prior weapons convictions, should be considered armed and dangerous. Additional felony drug and pursuit-related charges will be filed upon his arrest.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and Canandaigua Police Department are asking anyone with any information in regards to Matthews to contact the Sheriff’s Ofice at (585) 394-4560
