7th Year of Soil Cleanup Near Geneva Foundry Underway

Cleared lot with concrete foundations and overgrown grass, bordered by trees, at the former Geneva Foundry site.
The former Geneva Foundry site, a brownfield that underwent extensive soil cleanup, is now a cleared lot with remnants of its industrial past.

The seventh-year of a multi-year cleanup effort of contaminated soil from properties located near the former Geneva Foundry Site on Jackson Street in the city is underway.

The DEC says up to 38 more contaminated properties are expected to be cleaned up this year, that’s in addition to the 179 properties already completed.

Air emissions from the former foundry’s furnace contained lead and arsenic, which were deposited onto the soil in the surrounding area.
