A Schuyler County man has been charged following an investigation into the theft of more than $4,000 from a Horseheads woman’s bank account.
According to the New York State Police, 46-year-old Jeffrey Riker, of Odessa, was arrested after investigators determined unauthorized transactions totaling $4,319 were made from the victim’s Chemung Canal Bank account between February and April of this year.
Troopers said they were called April 21 to a home on Level Acres Drive in the town of Horseheads for a fraud complaint. The victim reported several unauthorized transactions and told investigators she had never given Riker permission to access or use her financial accounts.
State Police said the investigation found the transactions were conducted through a Cash App account linked to Riker. Investigators also reviewed bank records and social media messages as part of the case.
Authorities said the victim reported Riker had previously been at her residence with a former home health aide.
Riker turned himself in to State Police in Horseheads on May 18 and was charged with third-degree grand larceny, a Class D felony. He was arraigned in Horseheads Town Court and released on his own recognizance.
Riker is scheduled to return to court on June 10.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
