One Tompkins County community is set to receive $4.8 million in state funding for critical wastewater treatment upgrades. The grant, part of New York State’s $453 million Water Infrastructure Improvement and Intermunicipal Water Infrastructure Grant programs, will help the village of Freeville bring its wastewater treatment plant into compliance with state discharge permits.
Governor Kathy Hochul said the funding supports the state’s clean water and affordability goals by helping small and rural communities complete essential water infrastructure projects without passing high costs onto local residents.
The improvements in Freeville are expected to strengthen public health protections, ensure reliable wastewater services, and support environmental quality in the area. The funding is part of a statewide effort to modernize aging water and sewer systems, improve resilience, and protect communities from water-related health and environmental risks.
