A Brooklyn man is facing federal charges after prosecutors say he stole more than $573,000 intended for the operation of an assisted living facility and the care of its elderly residents.

According to federal authorities, 41-year-old Ezriel Green appeared in federal court on June 2 on a charge of theft of government property. The case is being investigated as part of a broader federal effort targeting fraud.

Prosecutors allege Green worked for an assisted living facility in Mohawk, New York, between October 2024 and April 2025, where he was responsible for managing the facility’s finances.

Federal investigators claim Green obtained and cashed more than $573,000 in checks issued by the United States Treasury Department and New York Medicaid that were made payable to the facility. Authorities allege the funds were intended to support the facility’s operations and provide care for elderly residents, but instead were converted for Green’s personal use.

The investigation is being conducted by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division.

In announcing the charges, First Assistant U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III alleged that Green’s actions harmed a vulnerable population and said his office remains committed to pursuing fraud cases involving public funds.

Federal officials from both SSA-OIG and IRS Criminal Investigation also emphasized their commitment to investigating the misuse of government funds and holding those responsible accountable.

If convicted, Green faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to five years of supervised release, and potential restitution to victims.
