If you live in Cayuga County, you’ll soon have a chance to recycle tires you may have lying around.
Cornell Cooperative of Extension of Cayuga County is partnering with multiple groups to offer a tire recycling drive this Saturday from 8:00-11:00a at the Natural Resource Center (7413 County House Road).
CCE of Cayuga County Executive Director Dan Welch explained to Finger Lakes News Radio the ecological benefits of recycling tires.
Firstly, when it comes to preventing diseases like EEE and the West Nile Virus, Welch said “those are both mosquito borne diseases and inside of the tires, when they fill up with water, that becomes a great breeding ground for mosquitoes.”
Another issue, according to Welch, which can be caused by large amounts of tires is that summer heat can make groups of tires extremely hot, increasing the possibility of a fire starting. He does add that this is not a huge issue in the Finger Lakes.
Tires 30″ or smaller can be recycled for $1.00/tire while those 31-36″ in diameter will cost $5.00/tire.
