Will New York State pass its budget on time? Speaking on FLX Morning, State Senator Rachel May said that she is cautiously optimistic that New Yorkers will have a budget in place by the April 1 deadline.

“From our end, [negotiations are] going faster than it’s ever gone, and part of that is, I think, the governor didn’t pick a lot of fights with us in her initial budget. Sometimes, governors take out big, important things and make us buy them back. She didn’t do that so much this year, so I think it’s going to be a smoother negotiation.”

Senator May added, though, that nothing is set in stone.

“But there’s always something that comes up at the very end, and we’ll have to see what that is and whether it can be resolved quickly.”

Last year’s budget was passed several weeks after the April 1 deadline while the legislature and governor deliberated on many bills.
