A Wells College banner hangs on a lamppost on campus, with academic buildings visible in the background, as the college prepares for the sale of its property.

A nonprofit has submitted a $12.5 million offer to buy the former Wells College campus in Aurora.

According to plans obtained by the Citizen, the Hiawatha Institute of Indigenous Knowledge plans to redevelop the site with apartments, a grocery, a coffee shop, a theater, and an alumnae club, before opening a new Indigenous college offering courses in art, culture, history, language, and environmental studies.

The institute also hopes to partner with SUNY and Syracuse University for exchange programs and curriculum development.
