Cayuga County is looking for a group to monitor the health of Owasco Lake.

At the legislature’s Wednesday Planning and Economic Development Department meeting it was announced that a request for fee quotes was sent out to three organizations – Upstate Freshwater Institute in Syracuse, Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, and Citizen’s Science Institute out of Ithaca. Quotes are due back by the 26th.

The hope is for that information to be put into a resolution which can be voted on in May.

From June through October, the selected institute would operate a buoy on the lake to collect data on its health and water quality.

At its March meeting, the legislature voted against renewing an agreement with the Finger Lakes Institute to continue its monitoring of the lake, something it had done since 2005.
