Two weathered parking meters, one displaying 'TIME EXPIRED,' illustrate the ongoing discussion about paid parking in downtown areas.

As part of it’s 2023-2024 budget, the City of Auburn will bring back paid parking downtown.

Speaking on FLX Morning, Stephanie DeVito with the Business Improvement District said businesses are split on the decision. Some believe free parking incentivizes people to shop downtown while others claim people parking over the two hour limit prevents new customers from getting a spot.

Free parking was originally established in 2021 to increase business downtown during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paid parking will return October 1st.
