A truck driver was killed and two people from Syracuse were injured in a crash on the New York State Thruway in Cayuga County.

State Police on Saturday released information about the Thursday afternoon accident on I-90 in the town of Brutus. Investigators determined a tractor-trailer driven by 50-year-old Mark Shidler of Applecreek, Ohio, was traveling west in the passing lane when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the median and guardrail into the eastbound lanes.

The truck struck a 2022 Honda driven by 24-year-old John Roosa, with passenger 22-year-old Ashley Fay. The impact caused the Honda to roll several times before coming to rest, trapping both occupants inside.

Shidler was pronounced dead at the scene. Roosa was airlifted to Upstate Hospital in Syracuse with serious injuries and is listed in stable but critical condition. Fay was taken by ambulance to the hospital and later released.

The crash backed up eastbound traffic for more than five miles and delayed drivers for about three hours.

The investigation is ongoing.
