Students in one community will now get free meals.

The Weedsport Central School District has been found eligible for the Community Eligibility Provision, a collaboration between New York and the US Department of Agriculture, designed to lessen food insecurity and allow students to learn without being distracted by hunger. The grant means the school district will be able to provide free breakfast and lunch to all of its students.

Thanks to the funding, the program took effect on November 1 and is expected to last until June 30, 2027.

The district adds the free program is automatic for students so no action is required by parents.
